If you have not traded in a while and suddenly find you cannot place orders or transfer shares, your CDS (Central Depository System) account may have been designated as Inactive or Dormant by Bursa Malaysia.
This is more common than most investors realise — especially for accounts opened years ago and left untouched. Here is what each status means, what you can and cannot do, and exactly how to get your account back to active.
Inactive vs Dormant: What Is the Difference?
Bursa Malaysia distinguishes between two separate statuses. They are not the same thing.
| Status | Condition | Securities in Account? |
|---|---|---|
| Inactive | No debit or credit entry for 36 consecutive months | Yes — shares still held in CDS |
| Dormant | Nil balance AND no entry for 36 consecutive months after nil balance | No — zero holdings |
In short: if you still have shares sitting in your CDS but have not bought or sold anything in 3 years, you are Inactive. If your account is empty and untouched for 3 years, you are Dormant.
What Happens When Your CDS Account Goes Inactive?
Your shares are safe — Bursa does not touch them. But your account is restricted in two important ways:
- Outward transfers are blocked — you cannot transfer your shares to another CDS account or broker.
- Trading is suspended — you cannot buy or sell shares through your broker’s platform until the account is reactivated.
All other CDS transactions remain available. But for practical purposes, an inactive account means you are locked out of the market until you reactivate.
How to Reactivate Your CDS Account
Option 1: Via Bursa Anywhere App (Fastest — No Fee)
The quickest way is through the Bursa Anywhere app, available on the App Store and Google Play:
- Download or open the Bursa Anywhere app.
- Register or log in to your account.
- Tap on the “Reactivate CDS Account” tab.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and pay any required fees via FPX.
- You will receive an email and inbox notification once reactivation is successful.
There is no reactivation fee for individual depositors using this method.
Option 2: Via Your Remisier or Stockbroking Company
For M+ Online or M+ Global clients, the easiest route is to contact your remisier directly. Your remisier can coordinate the reactivation process with Malacca Securities on your behalf — no need to visit a branch or fill in forms yourself.
Simply message or call your remisier, provide your CDS account number, and they will guide you through the steps.
Option 3: Application Form (For Corporates and Walk-In)
Alternatively, complete the Application for Reactivation of CDS Account Form, available on the Bursa Malaysia corporate website, and submit it to your ADA or stockbroking company.
For corporate depositors (companies, businesses), a written request signed by authorised signatory(ies) as per the board resolution is required.
Your Remisier Has Resigned or Gone Missing?
This is a situation many investors face — especially those who opened their M+ Online or M+ Global accounts years ago and have since lost contact with the remisier who handled their account.
If your remisier has resigned, retired, or is no longer reachable, you do not need to start from scratch. You can:
- Contact me directly — I will assist you with the reactivation process and take over servicing your account.
- Switch remisier — transfer your account to a new active remisier within Malacca Securities at no cost, without moving your CDS account or losing your trading history.

Thinking of Switching Remisier at the Same Time?
If your previous remisier is no longer active, it may also be a good time to switch to a remisier who is reachable, responsive, and uses AI-powered tools to keep you informed.
Switching remisier within Malacca Securities does not affect your CDS account number, trading history, or existing holdings. The process is straightforward — your new remisier handles the internal transfer paperwork.
