This guide is for anyone holding an M+ account with Malacca Securities, or thinking about opening one. If you’re unsure whether you have a Conventional or Islamic account, or you’re trying to decide which one to open, this will walk you through it.
What That Last Letter in Your Client Code Actually Means

When you opened your account with us, you were given a client code. Look at the very last character of that code — it’s either a C or a J.
C = Conventional account. You can trade any security listed on Bursa Malaysia, without religious or ethical screening restrictions.
J = Islamic account. You can only trade securities that have been screened and approved as Shariah-compliant by Bursa Malaysia’s Shariah Advisory Council.
That single letter is your account’s DNA. It determines which counters you’re allowed to buy and sell, and it’s set when you first apply.
How to Check Which Type You Currently Hold
The fastest way is to look at any document from us — your account statement, your contract note, or your statement of shareholding. Your client code appears on all of these.
If you can’t find a physical document, log in to M+ Online or M+ Global and check your account profile or dashboard. Your full client code should be visible there. Write it down and look at that final letter.
Another option: ring me or send a message on WhatsApp. I can confirm it in ten seconds. Most of the time, people opening their first account don’t think to ask which type they’re getting, and then wonder later why certain counters won’t trade.
The Practical Difference When You’re Actually Trading
Here’s what it comes down to on trading day.
With a Conventional (C) account: You see a stock you want to buy. You check the Bursa listing. It’s listed and active. You place your order. Done. No further screening applies.
With an Islamic (J) account: You see a stock you want to buy. You check the Bursa listing. It’s listed and active. But before you can trade it, you need to verify it’s on Bursa’s current Shariah-compliant securities list. If it’s not on that list, your order cannot be placed. The system will block it.
This isn’t Malacca Securities being difficult — it’s the regulatory framework. Islamic accounts are contractually and religiously bound to only hold Shariah-compliant securities. We’re obligated to enforce this at the platform level.
Which Counters Are Off-Limits on an Islamic Account
Bursa Malaysia’s Shariah screening excludes companies involved in activities considered non-compliant with Islamic principles. This typically includes:
- Banks and financial institutions offering conventional interest-based products
- Companies in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, or pork production
- Defence contractors involved in weapons manufacturing
- Entertainment companies in certain categories
- Conventional insurance providers
The rules are strict and well-defined. It’s not arbitrary — it’s based on a published framework that Bursa applies consistently.
If you try to buy a restricted counter on a J account, your order will be rejected at the M+ platform level. You won’t even get to the exchange floor.
Understanding Bursa’s Shariah-Compliant Securities List
Bursa Malaysia maintains an official list of all Shariah-compliant securities. This list is reviewed and updated twice a year — typically in January and July.
Why twice a year? Because a company’s business activities can change. A company might take on new debt structures, spin off a division, or acquire a business that triggers de-listing from the Shariah-compliant list. When that happens, Islamic account holders are notified and given a grace period before trading restrictions take effect.
You can view the current Shariah-compliant securities list on Bursa’s website. If you hold a J account, it’s worth checking this list occasionally if you’re considering a new stock purchase. It takes two minutes and saves frustration.
As a remisier, I keep this list handy. If a client asks whether a counter is tradeable on their Islamic account, I cross-reference it immediately rather than guessing.
How to Decide Which Account Type When You’re Starting Out
If you’re opening a new account with us, the choice matters. Here’s how to think about it.
Choose Conventional (C) if: You want maximum flexibility to trade any listed counter. You have no religious or ethical investment restrictions. You want to keep your options as open as possible without worrying about screening rules.
Choose Islamic (J) if: Your personal or religious values align with Shariah-compliant investing. You’re comfortable with the screening restrictions and want to ensure your portfolio reflects Shariah principles. You plan to hold the account long-term and won’t need unrestricted access to all counters.
Neither choice is “better” — it’s personal. I’ve seen highly successful investors on both account types. The key is choosing the one that matches your intentions and values when you sign up.
When we meet to open your account, we’ll go through this. I always ask clients: “Are you opening this for yourself, and does Shariah-compliance matter to you?” Their answer determines which code I assign.
| Account Type | Client Code Ends In | Can Trade All Bursa Counters? | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional | C | Yes | Maximum flexibility |
| Islamic | J | No — Shariah-compliant only | Values-aligned investing |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Assuming all listed counters are tradeable on your J account. They’re not. Always check Bursa’s Shariah list first. I’ve had clients frustrated because an order was rejected, only to find out the counter isn’t Shariah-compliant. It takes 30 seconds to check — do it.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the semi-annual list review. If you hold a J account and haven’t checked Bursa’s list in six months, a counter you own might have been de-listed. You’ll get notification, but staying aware yourself is smarter.
Mistake 3: Opening a Conventional account when you meant to open Islamic, or vice versa. Read your confirmation documents carefully. Your client code should be on them. If there’s any doubt before you start trading, contact me to confirm before you place your first order.
Mistake 4: Thinking the restrictions are Malacca Securities being difficult. They’re not. We’re following Bursa Malaysia’s regulatory framework and Islamic financial law. It’s the same across every broker in Malaysia.
Key Takeaways
- The last letter of your M+ client code (C or J) determines your account type and what you can trade.
- Conventional accounts (C) have no trading restrictions; Islamic accounts (J) are limited to Shariah-compliant securities only.
- Bursa Malaysia maintains and reviews the official Shariah-compliant securities list twice yearly, typically in January and July.
- Check the Shariah-compliant list before buying any counter on a J account — the system will reject trades on non-compliant stocks.
- Decide your account type based on your investment values and flexibility needs when opening a new account.
- If you’re unsure which type you hold or which type to open, ask before you trade — it’s simpler than working it out afterwards.
